Elizabeth – It is nice that you have decided to use a 2-uneven column grid, however I’m wondering if I am seeing a page within a page? Do you need that internal shape with the fuzzy drop shadow? I don’t think so – and it is taking up space that you need for your articles and other elements. So – remove that grey shape and you’ll have a good-sized margin in place between the ends of your line and the page edge without moving anything else. Easy improvement.
Logo – I don’t see one. I see a lovely illustration at the top of the page under your masthead. So… why not reduce that to become a logo that can sit in the upper left of the page? Your masthead might need to sit on 2 lines next to this logo, but that will also be a good change, I think.
Please know that the subhead, under the masthead, is actually “The CAI Newsletter”. You can add “Fall 2016” if you like on that same line.
Photos – what have you done to those faces? There is a huge distortion here – so please “Place” that photo again and make sure not to distort it. If you feel like, without distortion, it seems too small on the page – then enlarge the width of that left column and reduce the width of the right column until you are happy with the grid size.
I wonder if the Mission Statement could sit below the photo in that small column… in a tinted box? It will appear every month, so it might be a good idea to find a place to tuck it away – using a sans serif very small font (9 pt would be plenty big enough for this). Then – the section “PLACES: Remote Underserved Mountain Communities” could begin the articles. Notice how I wrote it here… you can use that styling to combine the 2 lines, which might work better for you in this type of grid.
Once you settle on a successful cover design, it isn’t terribly hard to continue through the next 3 pages with the same approach.
