Tru iPad Wide Grid Layout Design

When I think of education, the color that come to my mind is blue and black. Notebook and education goes together, and so I added in some horizontal lines in the back. It didn’t look good, and it was conflicting with other elements which lead to my decision to rotate it. As for the image, I decide to use it to balance out the list toward the left.

I found this assignment particularly difficult because of how limited our assets were. I didn't think that the picture should be the focus, so I couldn't blow that up too much. I created a design inspired by some Central Asian designs in Illustrator to fill up some white space, and then used the mountain photo from last week to make the background somewhat interesting (Tru, I obviously liked your idea~). The color over the mountain is a slight gradient.

I'm not super happy with what I have but I didn't get a whole lot to work with, so this'll have to do.

Cinelli 960 Gride

Here's my 960 Grid. I found this assignment very frustrating and annoyed but I did enjoy the challenge. I'm still new to Indesign but after looking at the VTC videos and doing the exercises it got a little easier. It's not great but it's better than my first composition.  My biggest challenge was trying to figure out how I wanted the assignment it's self to looks. After looking around for a little inspiration I stumbled upon a poster I did last semester and I really I liked the way it looked but the design as whole wouldn't work because the text wouldn't be readable for my classmates, but the design it's self inspired me and gave me a new idea and approach to this assignment. After that the finding a typeface and style kind of clicked. The typefaces that I used for this assignment are
Helvetica Neue Ultra light, Medium and Light. I picked these fonts because I really like the clean crisp look  of the font. It's not as good as my classmates, but it's a start. Please feel free to critique.

My last update after the last revision.

Richard 960 Grid Design

So at the beginning of my thought process for this work, I was going to attempt duplicating the image, but fading it so that it gave the illusion that the pic was fading in an out. Then, I would've made the text boxes contain the text, but the more I began to fiddle with everything, the more I decided to go about the adjective a different way.

Main issues with this, was that my computer was overheating and thus slowing down, so that is the main reason I am posting this so late after the deadline. But, I digress, as this post is to explain my thought processes for this project. As I was searching for type faces that would look good, and also make my project more engaging, I struggled with applying lessons I learned in my Typography classes. I ended up settling for a font called Luna for the main title, and Light up the world for the sub headers, trying to keep the text looking fun, and interesting. The main body text is Futura.

I feel like there is some adjusting to do, but I'm sure what that all entails.

Varmac 960 Grid Design

Upon learning this was for Central Asia-focused organization specifically, one of my first thoughts was trying to give the design a certain cultural flavor to make it stand out, done through using the typeface Basmachi for the title and subtitles. In retrospect, I'd have liked to done more research, but my time was limited, and I couldn't implement Central Asian decorative designs like I wanted to. The typeface is also a bit difficult to read.

I also really liked the mountain as a backdrop, and thought it'd be really nice to have the body text in translucent containers over the image, which I then feathered at the bottom to make for a smooth transition. The title at the top, the two text boxes and the contact information at the bottom all are aligned to the grid.

My first thought when tackling this project is, how do I make this set of dull information look interesting without breaking the grid layout? My attention went right toward the image. To start my design off, I placed the image at the top corner of my grid layout. For some reason, I really like the cloud at the top of the mountain, and so I decided to use it as a guideline to draw the eye toward the institution name. I want the institute name to scream at you with excitement and so I went with a thick san-serif typeface, Impact, and align it vertically adjacent to the image. To form a connection, I use the same blue as the sky of the image. To form a nice contrast, I went with a serif typeface Garamond to counter balance the san-serif typeface Impact. At this point, the design look kind of busy with too many text overpowering the image, and so I added in some line to break up the text into groups for a more clean and organized look. The design is near complete, I just didn’t like the white background. The black lines on the white background and the sharp corner of the image just make the design feel soo sharp. I then noticed the smooth cloud and gradient sky of the image kind of balanced out the sharp edges of the mountains. And so I went ahead and implements that idea to my design by enlarging the image to the point of where the sky cover the whole design, lowered down the opacity and set it as my new background. Overall I like the feel and look of my design.

Tarr_960 Grid Exercise

For the web layout portion of this project, I decided to put the information in hierarchical order starting with the heading. I chose to offset the heading from the rest of the type so that one side was not completely covered in information and I created a nice contrast between the background image and text by making it an off-white color. I felt as though the contact information should have been easy to find and under the heading simply because it's everything you need to be able to find and/or contact the Central Asia Institute. I felt the need to put a solid background behind the text due to how busy the picture is with different colors, it may have been harder to read if the text went directly over the picture. Lastly, I created a color palette that matched many of the colors in the image just to make the information relate even more to the image in the background.
