Richard 960 Grid Design

So at the beginning of my thought process for this work, I was going to attempt duplicating the image, but fading it so that it gave the illusion that the pic was fading in an out. Then, I would've made the text boxes contain the text, but the more I began to fiddle with everything, the more I decided to go about the adjective a different way.

Main issues with this, was that my computer was overheating and thus slowing down, so that is the main reason I am posting this so late after the deadline. But, I digress, as this post is to explain my thought processes for this project. As I was searching for type faces that would look good, and also make my project more engaging, I struggled with applying lessons I learned in my Typography classes. I ended up settling for a font called Luna for the main title, and Light up the world for the sub headers, trying to keep the text looking fun, and interesting. The main body text is Futura.

I feel like there is some adjusting to do, but I'm sure what that all entails.

  1. Hi, Hilayna, I think your text box was well placed on top of the background image, and I also like the light blue gradient that you used. My only concern is about the white color that you used in the text. In my opinion, because they are two light color on top of each other, it make it hard to read.

  2. Hilayna – Your heading font is expressive, which is a good beginning. As you have discovered, using an image as a background can create a multitude of issues to solve in the layout. Are you sure you want to do that? Is there another way to use the image, smaller in the layout – which will allow your typographic work to be the main point of the composition? This is what the exercise is all about – typographic solutions that allow an image in a subtle way to be used. This is not subtle, right? So – please rethink the use of this image. You don’t even have to use it at all!

Please do not, ever, use a stroke around body text. It almost never helps create the kind of contrast we need to aid readability. Don’t do it! Can you actually read the contact info at the bottom? I don’t think so. Ultimately – readability is the “test” – if it can’t be read, then we haven’t done our job.

So – I’m encouraging you to step back, and reconsider your approach to this layout, allowing the underlying grid to suggest new options for text placement. With a less busy background, you will have a multitude of choices. Continue your creativity – and think about your sections of type as “shapes” within the format. Feel free to break apart those paragraphs even further to emphasize certain words. But… first choose body copy fonts that are readable. I look forward to seeing what you do next!!
