Tarr_IPad Wide Grid Layout Design

My first thought for this layout was that there wasn't much text to work with compared to the last project. I chose to keep the background a simple plain color that matched the picture. I tried to find a heading typeface that would match the culture and the project itself. When I finished with the main heading and paragraph part of this layout, I made it so that the Women's Education list almost looked separate so it didn't get confused with the beginning paragraph.

  1. Nicole, I really enjoy this layout. I really like the color you chose for the background, it's such a nice earthy toned green and coordinates well with the photo. I like the way you used the photo along the top. In a way it introduces us to the page the way it is set up. I like the way you separated the information with one enclosed text box. The typeface you chose for the headings has a sort of rough texture to it, which I think goes well with the theme of the photo as well. I also like that you thought of changing the bullets to a different graphic, another element for our eyes to look at. Only thing I can suggest is maybe not to make the horizontal rule as thick. Overall great job!!

  2. I see you really like the boxes running off the page, which I think is great! The background color is really gorgeous as well, and it seems to go nicely with the image. The bullets were a very nice touch, as Eleni said above me, it does give the viewer something more to look at. I do agree there really wasn't much text to work with this time around, but I think you executed the exercise nicely with your layout. I love it overall! Nicely done.

  3. Nicole, I love your color and typeface choices. The really thick rule under Project overseas can be a little too overpowering, maybe you can try making it thinner. I like what you did with Women Education; by fitting it in that box, it create a very well balanced and organized overall design.

  4. Nichole – Nice work. The background color comes from the photo itself, so it appears to be an extension of the photo. Typeface selection imparts a bit of expression as well. Nice. I can see that some of the comments above identify the heavy black rule as being out of place. I suspect it is… but my solution to that would be the rethink the right hand side of your layout to unify with that bold rule. Do you need so much contrast in that area that holds “Women’s Education”? I don’t think so… and it seems to divide your layout in a big way… rather than simply add interest to an otherwise unified design. You need to create a bit more unity in your design.

Is the white background the best contrasting color? Did you try black (or another mid-to-dark color), with white type? That would actually be less of a visual change, wouldn’t it? Do you need a stroke around the text frame? Because it is a different weight from the rule beneath “Projects Overseas” I question it. (This might also be why the heavy rule was questioned… you really don’t need 2 different rule weights within this design). Lastly – you have chosen to “bleed” the photo up, and the white box to the right. This actually pulls the design off balance. Consider allowing the contrasting background color (black, or another mid-to-dark color) to bleed up, and behind the photo instead. Remember – when you bleed off the page, the bleeding element(s) take on a massive amount of visual weight. Your job is to pay close attention to the page balance and rebalance the page somehow. It’s an exciting way to design, but it does force you to think more clearly about “balance”. Looking forward to seeing where this goes next.
