Tarr Final Newsletter

Since the audience I'm trying to attract are retired CEOs, I decided to make this layout a little more sophisticated. By sophisticated I mean, more book like rather than a teenage girl pop magazine with thousands of colors or some DIY home decor magazine that has a more relaxed feel. I kept the number of colors to a minimum and went for cool trustworthy colors, like a dark and a light blue. For fonts I also made it so one serif font was for headings and one sans serif was for subheadings and body copy. As for the way I layed things out, I started with the bulleted section on the front to get right to the point of the newsletter to give the reader an idea on whats going on and why they're receiving this newsletter. I used columns on page 2 and 3 to make it easier on the eye to read and i kept the text black with a white background also for readability.

  1. Nicole – this is looking quite nice. Some thoughts:

Cover: You need a bit more white space around the type and above/below the headings, so it doesn’t look quite so dense. Feel free to cut some type to give you more space above and below your sections, and consider deeper indents for parts of the lists.

Add page 1 at bottom right… that corner has the room for it.

Can you really read the subtitle below the masthead? (Good solution for the logo – nice).

The photos are so successful on page 2 I recommend that you cut type on page 3 to do the same thing, adding photos along the bottom. It will be a really strong spread (and equally balanced) if you do this.

    Back Cover
Can you really read the quote? Do you need more contrast? Why not increase the opacity behind the type? Also – the byline (Mortenson) should be smaller than the quote itself, and sit FR on the same last line of the quote. This will allow you to pull up the bottom of that white translucent text frame and uncover more of that great photo.

  2. Nicole, this is becoming a really appealing newsletter!! Very nice!

On the front page (cover) it is a bit hard to read the subtitle under the masthead, maybe try changing it to white or some other lighter color that goes with your color palette.

On the back cover, it is again, a bit hard to read the quote inside the text box on top of the picture. Maybe try hiking up the opacity on the text box so less of the picture shows through.

    So far, so good!
