For the web layout portion of this project, I decided to put the information in hierarchical order starting with the heading. I chose to offset the heading from the rest of the type so that one side was not completely covered in information and I created a nice contrast between the background image and text by making it an off-white color. I felt as though the contact information should have been easy to find and under the heading simply because it's everything you need to be able to find and/or contact the Central Asia Institute. I felt the need to put a solid background behind the text due to how busy the picture is with different colors, it may have been harder to read if the text went directly over the picture. Lastly, I created a color palette that matched many of the colors in the image just to make the information relate even more to the image in the background.

Nicole, I like that you separated the title from the rest of the text because it makes our eyes move all along the page and not just focus on one part or side. I also like the relativity of the image with the text by matching the colors. If anything I think you could have made the solid boxes a little smaller so they don't take up too much of the image, but only slightly smaller. Because I do like that even though the boxes are a little big, they're not big enough to cover the image. There's just enough showing still to let the viewer be able to tell what the image is.
ReplyDeleteI like what did with the main title and the picture, It has a welcoming feel to it. I agree with Eleni about how the box might be covering too much of the background picture. Maybe you could also push the Hierarchy a bit further. The whole right side just look like a a blob of text. I do like the typeface, good choice.

ReplyDeleteNicole – You have found a way to use the photo full bleed and yet allow us to easily read the text. That’s a good thing. And the italic font used for the heading gives this composition a forward momentum, and classic feel. Another good thing. The challenges I think you have here are in the unbalanced composition – it pulls heavily to the right. Do you see? Consider reducing the contact information (significantly) and placing its text frame inside the larger frame below – adding a text wrap so that the main body copy runs around its edges. Then you can consider using a contrasting fill color, so we see a difference in the 2 fill backgrounds. Next – I’m not sure you need a heavy stroke around the text frame(s). Unless that stroke added a cultural element to the page (sometimes, uneven, woven edges can evoke the organic nature of a culture) you may not need it. Lastly – the body copy text frame is so close to the bottom of the page, why not allow it to actually bleed off the page? I look forward to seeing how you choose to refine this.
