I found this assignment particularly difficult because of how limited our assets were. I didn't think that the picture should be the focus, so I couldn't blow that up too much. I created a design inspired by some Central Asian designs in Illustrator to fill up some white space, and then used the mountain photo from last week to make the background somewhat interesting (Tru, I obviously liked your idea~). The color over the mountain is a slight gradient.
I'm not super happy with what I have but I didn't get a whole lot to work with, so this'll have to do.
Nat – you have added all sorts of lovely elements and really add a cultural feel to the page. Good experimentation and I can certainly see you using the border design in your final newsletter design. So - hold onto it.
ReplyDeleteBut… it’s time for you to start to view typography as an element that can be enlarged, chunked and re-chunked, repeated, and imbued with the same expressive appeal that you have added through the background and border designs. So… now consider how you can be creative with your font choices, the size and placement of the different sections. Mostly – enlarge your type so it helps you more fully use the space on the page. Currently, you have what I call “left over” undersigned space at the bottom of both columns. It isn’t really considered space, is it? It’s left over. The negative space on a page should always be considered… and designed, not left over. Make sense?
Nat, again I really love that you brought the culture into the design. I appreciate how you took the time to create your own graphics to spark up the design even more. I also like the colors you chose, especially the background color. If anything, I think you have a little too much empty space towards the bottom. Though we did not have much text to work with this time, I feel that maybe you could have made the text a bit bigger to help fill up the space. Or arrange the text in different positions or parts of the page to take up more space.
