Pirperis_iPad Wide Grid Layout Design

For this design, I tried not to put too much emphasis on the photo, so I only included a portion of it in the corner. Since the article speaks of "women's" education, I figured it would be appropriate to make the woman the focal point of the photo. I grabbed the colors from the woman's clothing for the background color and the title color. They also happened to be complementary colors. I created the diagonal design because I thought it looked like a mountain, and upon research I noticed that their logo has a mountain so I figured it went with their theme. I also tried using the same type face that they use in their original logo as well. Both the text boxes are the same size and aligned on the columns from the grid, but on different columns. Overall I tried to give an appealing look to a page even if it is about education, but also trying to stick with their theme.

  1. Eleni,
I absolutely love what you've done with this layout so far. The image placement with the main heading really caught my eye. I think my favorite element about your layout is the font you've chosen. It reminds me so much of the culture in the image as well as what the information is about.

The only thing I would suggest changing, or at least play around with is the top paragraph. For this layout it works okay, but i feel like you could make the text look and feel more in place. Maybe try adding a drop cap with the font you used for the headings, or making the text a little bigger and adjust the position a little.

  2. Great job Eleni, I really liked your layout, the header and the image are well-matched in that position. Also good choice on the colors. The only thing that in my opinion you can do to change your layout is to choose a right alignment in your text block, and make your text a little bigger.

  3. Wow, the slant and color of the text are super nice! I love the way the image also peeks out of the corner like that, it really does connect the viewer to the huge heading. I think you did a great job sticking to the mountain theme as well with the slant. Its very nice to look at. Also with the color overlaid on top of the picture, it shows through almost like you added a texture, which is done very subtle and doesn't distract from the text.

  4. Eleni, I LOVE what you've done with the assignment. The diagonal is very appealing and the "crop" of the photo is extremely well-positioned and tasteful, as are the colors. The headings' typeface is also a lovely touch.

However, I think that the paragraphs not being vertically linear reads poorly. Furthermore the bottom half is a continuation of the top half, so splitting it up like that, and making the subheading as large as it is both make it read weirdly. I'm also not a big fan of the body type, being a condensed, hard-to-read font.

Overall, though, it looks REALLY nice.

  5. Eleni,

I love what you did with the image and the header, very appealing. The color fit very nicely with the whole design. Something about the body paragraph feel out of place, maybe because it not aligned to anything which make it feel out of place. Also the O,J,E,C in Project can use some kerning.

  6. Elena – Although the photo is, in fact, the focal point you have used it in a very wise way. Cropping the photo to show the connection between the mother and her child is brilliant, and also directs our eyes to the title on the page. You have spent time choosing the font by doing some research, and I commend you for that. I also notice that the position of the title seems to echo the fabric fringe on the mother’s head… dangling down from the gold double rule. I don’t know if that was intentional on your part, but if not – it is a “happy accident” and lends a sense of sophistication to the layout. The dark background serves as a continuation of the photo, because you pulled that color directly from the dark places in the photo – again, a good decision. As this stands, it is a successful layout. But… is there more that you can do? I would encourage you to pay close attention to the visual hierarchy of the composition. Where do you want our eyes to go after reading the title? Are you worried that we might skip to the subhead and read that section, before reading the top section? If so – then you may need to pay some attention to that top text block, and work to pull our eyes up there instead of skipping it. What can you do? You have multiple options – and I’ll leave you to think about them. Very nice work.
